Tired of support that feels routine and makes little impact?

A new model for disability support that builds identity, autonomy, and confidence

Tired of support that feels routine and makes little impact? So are we.

Learning to Become - a fresh model for disability support that moves beyond maintenance toward growth.

It’s designed to help people build identity, autonomy, and confidence, not just be passive receivers of care.

Grounded in everyday living and emotional safety, the framework teaches support workers how to create environments where choice, connection, and progress are possible.

Where people don’t just get through the day, they learn to become who they want to be.

Disability or no disability, identity is not something a person 'has'; it’s something we are constantly becoming and evolving.

Real growth happens through everyday opportunities to try, fail, reflect, and try again. The role of a support worker is not to direct life, but to build autonomy within safe and supportive environments..

Learning to become is a ground-breaking framework designed to reshape how we support people with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities. We shift the focus from what’s missing to investing in who they want to become.

  • This isn’t about teaching independence through compliance. It’s about building identity, capability, and emotional safety through the everyday moments that make up a life.
  • Drawing from developmental psychology, trauma-informed practice, and the lived experiences of people with disability, it helps support workers, behaviour practitioners, and service leaders shift from transactional support to transformative engagement.

“We don’t teach you to be; we teach you to discover who you are.”

Accompanying learning modules

To help embed the model into practice, we’ve created a series of short learning modules:

  • The learning to surf analogy: 'How to become': Understand the stages of supported decision-making.
  • Emotional safety and identity-building: How to support personal growth without controlling.
  • Let them grow: A support approach inspired by Mel Robbins’ 'let them' philosophy.
  • Micro-moments that matter: How daily support becomes the vehicle for identity development.
  • Tracking progress without pressure: Using our tools to measure capacity and autonomy.

Each module is 15–20 minutes and designed to fit into everyday practice.

Coming soon: the book We’re excited to announce that the Learning to Become book will be released soon. It includes:

  • The theory and structure behind the model.
  • Practical tools for decision-making and supported autonomy.
  • Real-world case studies from SIL, community, and behaviour support settings.
  • Reflection questions and checklists to guide teams and practitioners.
